Under the direction of the Institute Director and Medical Director, the Safety Director is responsible to oversee performance of hyperbaric staff.  Assuring all safety policies and procedures are followed.  Develops and implements staff education in accordance with the most current applicable safety guidelines as dictated by the regulating bodies (i.e. NFPA – 99) in collaboration with Director of Nursing Education. Serves as the key resource for hyperbaric technicians as it relates to the safety, maintenance, and system compliance for the hyperbaric program.  The Safety Director is responsible for the quality of patient hyperbaric treatments; staff training and competencies and the adherence to standards of care and safety performed by the Hyperbaric Technologist and other relevant department staff.   Assists in the delivery of hyperbaric treatments; maintaining patient and environmental safety at all times.   

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • In conjunction with the Institute Director, facilitates and maintains lines of communication with various ancillary areas within the Wound Healing Institute.
  • Provides initial and concurrent documented education for hyperbaric and wound care staff regarding areas of hyperbaric physiology, decompression equipment functions and patient safety.
  • Provides hyperbaric chamber system orientation and serves as preceptor for all staff and physicians assuring competencies.
  • Coordinates and supervises safety drills and exercises.
  • Maintains oversight of all HBO logs.
  • Assists with patient care duties as needed and maintains required competencies.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and required in-services. Provides HBO in-services as appropriate.
  • Maintains and orders hyperbaric supplies as appropriate.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Participates in professional organizations such as the Associates of the UHMS.
